It happened to children at the petting zoo at Merrymead Farm in Lansdale, PA in 2000. Two of those children suffered hemolytic uremic syndrome, and needed extensive hospitalization and dialysis for kidney failure. The farmer's own infant son died in October, 2000 of an E. coli infection at 4 days old. In total, there were 15 confirmed and 42 probable cases of the toxic E. coli 0157:H7 infection associated with exposure to Merrymead Farms. The petting zoo remains open.

Also campylobacter infection has an increased risk of the person developing Guillain Barre Syndrome.
